One of these
ultra small weather alert radios should always be an
important part of your emergency preparedness kit or your bug out
bag. If you travel, especially to places where hurricanes or
tornadoes are possible, bringing a pocket weather radio along in
your suitcase could be a lifesaver. Even if you wind up miles from
civilization, a pocket weather radio should have more than
sufficient power to bring in stations from a good distance away,
keeping you in the loop with what's happening and permitting you
to monitor changing weather conditions,.
These pocket size alert radios almost always feature standard
AM/FM tuners along with an NOAA Weather Band receiver which will
sounds a very loud audible tone when an extreme weather condition
is imminent. Even with the radio turned off, of if you are
listening to a regular station, these small weather alert monitors
will to monitor the NOAA channels and alert you if an emergency
occurs.
Because you may not have access to electricity during a bad
weather event or if you are away from civilization, the best
pocket weather radios will also include multiple power resources.
A hand crank with rechargeable batteries is common, even in the
smallest units. Some even have the ability to re-charge with solar
energy when the sun is up.
Look for a pocket radio that uses the standard AA size batteries,
as these are almost always the easiest to find. If you purchase a
radio with a clock or other continuously-running feature you will
want to be doubly-sure that you have additional batteries, and
that you don't store it for any length of time with the batteries
installed. When you are packing your radio in an emergency kit, be
sure to remove the batteries and store them separately.
